EDITOR'S NOTE

Welcome to the first issue of the Ashesi University Bulletin: a quarterly publication of campus news, feature articles, essays, profiles of people in our community, and of course, the vigorous academic debates that are so fundamental to a community of learning such as ours.

The name "Ashesi" means "a beginning" in the Akan language, and what an appropriate name it is. We have just completed our first term here at Ashesi and indeed, it has been a exciting period full of great beginnings.

What's important in the lives of university students? Meaningful learning experiences that build upon their knowledge base and challenge their views of themselves, their environment and the world? Access to current and relevant information? A stimulating and enjoyable student and campus life? Availability of facilities and services that ensure good physical and mental health? During this first term we have seen the beginnings of all of these and more... From the birth of our students' fledgling organization, "The Club", to the installation and full connectivity of our campus satellite dish, providing Ashesi with direct internet access, we have accomplished so much in such a short period of time.

We're off to a strong beginning, and envision great things for the future. "Ayekoo" ("well done" in Akan) to the students, faculty and staff of Ashesi. We have just begun...
