Daring to Dream

EDITOR'S NOTE, OCTOBER 2002

"Look at the stars. Look how they shine. For you and everything that you'll do." These last sentences from Patrick Awuah's speech on Inauguration Day perfectly capture the sentiment here at Ashesi. And the essays in this bulletin demonstrate the incredible hopes and aspirations of the Ashesi community.

Inauguration Day was truly inspiring for all of us. Visitors started to arrive at Ashesi at 9:30AM and were welcomed by the sight and sound of traditional drumming and dancing. Students ushered the visitors to their seats beneath the canopies. By 10AM the seats were filled to capacity with representatives from Ghana’s business, education, and diplomatic communities. Other well-wishers, parents, faculty, staff and the media were also present.

The audience’s attention was drawn to the stage by the voice of the event’s chairperson, Mildred Wulff. Silence fell. The inauguration ceremony of Ashesi University had officially begun. The presentations on stage moved smoothly and flawlessly from one speaker to the next; beginning with the opening welcome address from an Ashesi student, Andrew Tarawali, to an inspirational message from Ashesi’s president and founder, Patrick Awuah, to the keynote speech by Mr. Paul Effah, Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education, and finally to the closing remarks by Ashesi student, Linda Fiah.

The ceremony was short and simple, but the vision that was shared was grand. All those present were clearly moved, and after socializing and enjoying refreshments, they took away the knowledge that tucked away in a corner of Accra, lay the seed of a mighty dream that is destined to flourish into an institution that will change the course of Ghana, Africa and the world.

I invite you to dream with us as you read this edition of the Ashesi University Bulletin.
