Ashesi's Earliest Years

ASHESI BEGINS

Classes began on March 4, 2002 at Ashesi University with thirty-one bright and eager students.

During the week of February 25, Ashesi's inaugural class was welcomed onto campus with various student orientation activities. They were given an inspiring speech by President Patrick Awuah (click to see full text of speech) and participated in numerous team-building exercises. They were also introduced to Ashesi's computer lab, where basic computing classes were conducted to familiarize students with file management, word processing and the use of spreadsheets and e-mail.

Students were encouraged and inspired by their first taste of learning at Ashesi. Many commented enthusiastically on the in-class discussions they were already enjoying in their classes, and were generally encouraged by the amount of individual attention they were receiving from instructors. On most evenings, the library and computer lab were filled until closing time at 8 pm.
