Founder & President
Before founding Ashesi, Patrick worked as a Program Manager for Microsoft Corporation. He holds bachelor degrees in Engineering and Economics from Swarthmore College, and an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. In 2004, Swarthmore awarded Patrick an honorary doctorate in recognition of his leadership in African higher education. Patrick Awuah was nominated a Global Leader 2007 by the World Economic Forum; and in recognition of his service to Ghana, was awarded Membership of the Order of the Volta by His Excellency, President J. A. Kufuor. He is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (a branch of The Aspen Global Leadership Network), a member of the United States Council on Foreign Relations, the Pacific Council on International Policy, and the Tau Beta Pi honor society for excellence in engineering. Marcia Grant brings to Ashesi her vast experience as a teacher, diplomat, educational administrator and college founder.
She has taught African, Latin American and International Politics at Oberlin College, served as foreign affairs consultant for the US Departments of State, Justice, and Labor, as Director of the Fulbright Program in Mexico, as Assistant Cultural Attaché for the American Embassy in Paris, as Director of the Edward S. Mason Program for Mid-Career Fellows at the Kennedy School at Harvard, and as Executive Director of the Institute of North American Studies in Barcelona.
In 1999, at the invitation of Queen Effat of Saudi Arabia and her daughter Princess Lolowah, Dr. Grant served as the founding Dean of Saudi Arabia's first liberal arts college for women. Since then, she has also served as Dean of the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy in Paris, as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, and as Academic Planning Head of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at The Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan.
Dr. Grant earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Swarthmore College, a Master of Arts and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in African Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Dean of Student and Community Affairs
Mrs. Ruth Kwakwa joins Ashesi as the Dean of Student and Community Affairs. A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Swarthmore College, Ruth comes to the team with several years of diverse experiences in different sectors. She worked with the World Bank and the Swedish Development Agency as a Consultant, Lintas Ghana Limited as Director of Media Strategy and Redhill School, South Africa as the Manager for Marketing, Brand Management and Alumni Relations. Ruth has a passion for working with young adults through mentoring, intercultural exchanges and leadership programs.
Before joining the Ashesi team, Carol was the Director of the MBA Career Management Center for Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. Prior to a career in higher education, she also spent several years in financial services working for both Goldman Sachs & Co. and Bank of America Securities. Carol earned her BS in Finance from Hampton University and her MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.
