Scholarships at Ashesi

Through Ashesi’s generous Scholarship Program, we make a great education available to those who otherwise could not afford it. Thanks to a $13 million partnership with The MasterCard Foundation in Canada, Ashesi will be awarding significant financial support to qualified students who need such assistance.

Students who win scholarships will be eligible for full or partial financial support to cover their tuition fees, text books, housing, and meals. In addition, 40 scholarship recipients will receive laptops each year.

All scholarship recipients will also receive priority for a campus job to help meet their financial need. Students will typically work 10 hours or less each week and use the income earned for personal expenses. Students who do not receive scholarships are still eligible for admission and for campus job opportunities.

Below are some frequently asked questions that will guide you through applying for scholarships at Ashesi.

Who can apply for a scholarship at Ashesi?
Typically, scholarships are awarded to students from low income and middle income families. Any family that cannot afford the full fees should complete a financial aid application form and turn it in with their admissions application. The Scholarship Committee will determine the amount of your award on the basis of demonstrated need and the strength of your application. You can download financial aid forms on our website or pass by our main campus in Berekuso. Submit your financial aid application form with your admissions application. You cannot apply for a scholarship after you have been admitted.

Will I need to submit any supporting documentation with my financial aid application?
Yes. A letter requesting why you need a scholarship is required. Families will also be required to submit bank statements, pay slips and any other relevant documentation. The more information you can include to support your inability to pay the full fees, the easier it will be to process your request.

What is Ashesi’s relationship with The MasterCard Foundation?
Through a $13 million partnership with The MasterCard Foundation in Canada, Ashesi has been able to expand its existing scholarship programme. Half of the scholarships funded by The MasterCard Foundation will be awarded to non-Ghanaians. This scholarship covers not only the full tuition, but also includes housing in Ashesi’s residence halls, meals on campus, a free laptop, spending money and annual trips home for international students after the second year.

How are scholarship decisions made?
The selection process begins by determining who should be given an offer of admission based on each applicant’s overall profile. Applicants are considered on the basis of documented financial need and upon a thorough assessment by the Ashesi Scholarship Committee of all information gathered during the admissions process for each candidate.

Based on your financial aid request, you are placed into one of three categories: Extreme Need (over $5,000), High Need (between $3,500 - $5,000), Medium Need (between $2000 - $3,500) or Low Need (less than $2,000). For each category of aid, there is a set amount of financial aid Ashesi can award.

Students in each category are ranked based on the competitiveness of their admissions application. Students who receive scholarships typically achieve mostly A’s and B’s on their transcripts and national exam results.

Will an application for a scholarship affect the decision to offer me admission to Ashesi?

No. The decision to make an offer of admission is done independently of scholarship applications and decisions. The Admissions Office first determines which applicants are most qualified to attend Ashesi. A Scholarship Committee then makes an independent decision regarding scholarship awards.

When will I know whether I have been awarded a scholarship?
The admissions office will give you a date you can expect to hear back from Ashesi, based on the date you applied. You will receive both your admission and scholarship decision at the same time.

Will my scholarship be renewed every year?
As long as you and your family can continue to demonstrate financial need, you can expect that your scholarship award will be renewed annually. The Scholarship Committee meets annually to assess the financial status of each scholar’s family. You may be asked to submit updated bank statements, pay slips and other supporting documents to verify your family’s financial standing.

In addition to the above expenses, we encourage parents to budget an additional $300 per semester to cover personal expenses and incidentals.

Ashesi has very flexible payment plans for families who cannot pay the balance in full at the start of the semester. For a nominal fee, families have the option of making payments twice a semester or four times a semester. Families who pay the balance due in full before the due date will receive a tuition discount.

  • Semester expenses may vary.
  • When making housing decisions, the university gives priority to students from homes outside Accra.
  • All fees are payable in the Cedi equivalent of the rates listed above, but may also be paid in US dollars
  • Scholarship awards often offer a discount on tuition fee only. All other fees could therefore remain as stated above even if you receive a scholarship.
