2011 Career Fair
CAREER FAIR 2011 MOVING TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Spirited!! That was the 2011 Ashesi Career fair summed up in one word. This year’s career fair brought together Ashesi students dressed smartly enough to be in the office of the President and the representatives of 44 well established companies, each with an eye for intelligence and unique personalities. The fair started with a spark—a passionate yet driven speech by Ms. Estelle Akofio- Sowah Google Lead for Ghana) which made many reflect on their personal drive and inspired many to pursue their goals and career paths in this competitive business world. Then came the long awaited remarks from Dr. Patrick Awuah—Founder and President of Ashesi. His speech pushed the fair straight into the third gear and set the stage for interactions between representatives of companies and students. Most company representatives interacted throughout the fair a sign of how serious everyone viewed the occasion. All around, adrenaline filled representatives were giving information about their products, services and career opportunities to eager students who not only listened but probed for more details. One representative from Amazing U stated he had never experienced a wonderful mix of intelligent and ambitious students as he had at the fair. He went on to add that he would definitely encourage any company that wanted to recruit employees to come to the Ashesi Career fair. Along the interactions were corporate games and activities such as Assessment Center with Afua Biney Class of 2011 emerging the winner. George Sylvanus Niikoi Neequaye won a laptop sponsored by Bizliteracy for winning the Ashesi Corporate Icon competition.
Representatives of companies such as Oxford and Beaumont, Amazing U, Airtel and AVIS were of the pinion that the career fair had allowed them to advertise their companies in a positive way as well as reach out for the mix of employees they were currently seeking.
Oxford and Beaumont, a legal firm was all the more appreciative of the fair because legal firms normally do not advertise in the media, hence this was one way to promote their firm and select possible employees or interns. Other firms felt that they were able to properly explain what their companies actually did which was beneficial for both company and students as it enabled them to get the right students for internships or employment.
It was good to know that the fair proved to be exactly what it was intended for—providing a platform for corporate Ghana to have open discussions with prospective employees in a relaxed atmosphere. Making it possible for employees to get information on what future employees were looking for from employers as well as help corporate Ghana to identify from a wide pool those who would be good additions to their companies.
Everyone left with a feeling of profound satisfaction knowing that they had some intelligent students who may be the next member of staff in their growing establishments.
At the end of the fair, most students had something concrete to take home--an enhanced understanding of the real corporate world and for some gaining interviews for internship or full time jobs. Others had more useful information about various companies to enable them plan their career paths more realistically.
The 2011 Ashesi Career Fair definitely set students in line for their future goals and gave companies the chance to broaden their scope of the next generation of leaders. If you missed this then be there for the 2012!
